We were completely unaware of the superiority of the Giant Josta until we stumbled upon a renowned currant collector who enlightened us about its unmatched qualities. We were amazed to learn that the Giant Josta is far superior to the standard black jostaberry that we were familiar with. It is believed to have a better berry and bigger fruit clusters. We are confident that it will live up to the hype surrounding it.

It is early to leaf out each spring, thornless and easy-to-grow; resistant to both powdery mildew and white pine blister rust. It fruits on older wood, so keep the many young shoots on established branches cut short once the bush gets to the size and shape you prefer.  Productive in both sun and shade, it will perform better with some afternoon shade in hotter summer areas. Cold hardy to USDA Zone 3.

  • How does it taste? Any interesting notes on nutrition?

    Reported to be sweeter. Jostaberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. In studies, the extracts and juice of the Jostaberry have been found to have anti-fungal properties, as well as inhibitive effects on some bacteria, such as E. coli.

  • Could you tell us more about why this is prohibited to some states? And why the Rust resistant varieties may be shipped to OH & MI? Lastly, how do you obtain a permit for shipping to OH?

    Jostaberries and currants can be asymtomatic carriers white pine blister rust. Each state has it's own rules and risk tolerances for importing these plants. Permits are obtained from your local agricultural authority.

  • What is the chill requirement for Jostaberries? And what Sunset Climate Zones would be a good match for growing them? (USDA Zones are too general / broad for judging in the many microclimates where I live. I live near the coast on the Central Coast of California.

    Jostaberries need at least 1000 chilling hours and grow well in Sunset Zones 3-5 and 13-17.

  • Can the Giant Jostaberry be shipped to New Hampshire zip code 03307?

    Yes, currently there are no restrictions on currants and jostaberries in New Hampshire.

  • What is the ultimate height and spread for the Giant Jostaberry?

    6 feet tall and 8 feet wide, eventually.

  • Is this self pollinating?

    Yes it is.

final review

This is my third and final review on the Giant jostaberry. I bought my bare root plant 2 summers ago.
this is the third winter it has been the ground. I have 5 varieties of Gooseberries, 5 currant varieties and a Orus 8 jostaberry The Giant Josta Looked good when received. It did not do anything for a month after planting then took off. By the end of the first winter at pruning time, I cut out one long branch. I made 3 cuttings from it and they all 3 took. It also had one branch near the ground that I burred and held down with a landscape staple. That branch also developed roots. The second summer I planted 2 of the cuttings out of pots and in the ground.
they both are doing well.The original plant is about 4 feet high and 5 feet wide. It had 1 berry on it last summer but a bird got it. I now have the original plant, 2 that spent last summer in the ground, 1 still in the pot and one ready to be separated from the mother plant. They are all doing well. I can not comment on the flavor of the berries but the plants are excellent.

Only 1 bud, then died

I bought and planted many currants, gooseberries, and jostaberries this last season. Unfortunately, the 1 giant jostaberry I ordered and planted only came with 1 bud that although did leaf (a single leaf), it soon died a few weeks later. I might order another one because I don't see the giant jostaberry available anywhere else, and maybe I just got a dud. All my other plants survived and thrived though.

No buds

This was sold as an extra large Jumbo Jostaberry. I received a heavily cut down single trunk with zero buds. It still has not sprouted after 3 weeks. All the other Ribes I planted at the same time have blossomed and are now forming fruits.

Plants in good condition

Got four plants all arrived with strong well well-wetted roots, I got them in the ground ASAP.

Looking forward to some nice berries in a few years!!!

Giant jostaberry

I got a great looking bare root plant but was a bit worried when after a month in the ground, there was not a sign of a green bud. Then the first green leaf appeared and off it went. It already has 4 main stalks and is growing fast. It’s leaves are almost 3 times the size of the ours 8 growing next to it. This is going to be a fun plant to watch next summer. It is very healthy and growing fast.

Nice bare root plant

Just got my Giant Josta Jostaberry today. It is planted and protected from deer damage. Obviously I can not say anything about how it settles in and grows over the summer But I can say it is a very nice bare root plant. It has a healthy looking stock, obviously with no leaves yet. It has a good large anchor root system and many fine feeder roots, I would rate it as excellent quality. I will try to remember to write a follow up review this Fall.
