Corylus avellana 'McDonald'

PROHIBITED TO AZ

McDonald is a heavy producer of delicious kernals with a very high nut meat-to-shell ratio. This new, highly blight-resistant selection from Oregon State U. blooms for longer than any other variety and ripens early in the season.

McDonald is an upright, open-form filbert bush/tree that can be maintained at 10' tall. Wepster, as well as York, Polly-O, and Yamhill, are excellent pollinizers for this popular variety.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Are hazelnuts suitable for south carolina? what varieties are proven? thanks

Yes, any of the blight resistant cultivars should do fine. You need at least two varieties.

  • I live in Dallas, Texas with clay soil. Will hazelnut trees do well in my area? Are they invasive?

Hazelnuts are extremely difficult to grow in Texas and would not be considered invasive due to their high mortality rate.

  • I have a native hazelnut growing in my yard (Western WA) that doesn’t bear. Would this tree be a good pollinizer for a native tree?

Your local native hazelnut is self-fertile and usually cross pollinates with another beaked hazel. McDonald has a different parentage.

  • Hello, once planted, how long will it take to harvest on your walnut trees?

Hazelnuts usually begin setting a good crop within 5 years. Walnuts take more like 10 years.

  • How old and How tall are these saplings?

    18-24" in pots.

  • Are MacDonald, Wepster and Polly-o available for shipping to Califfornia?

    Yes they are!

  • How big is the plant

12"-24" when shipped in a pot

Beautiful strong plants

ordered this variety together with Wepster. Both bushes arrived strong, healthy, and are growing well. Very happy.

Hapy "McDonald" hazelnut in PA, zone 6B/7a.

I planted "McDonald" hazelnut from Raintree Nursery in spring 2019. Now it is mature tee of 10 ft tall and produces tasty nuts. Nuts are not large, but there is very little free space between shell and kernel. Therefore, kernels are of comparable size to industrial hazelnuts, just 10-20% smaller. However, the flavor is wonderful. Nuts are slightly oblong, compared to "Wepster" round nuts. The tree grows more upward than wide, is narrower than "Wepster", and is healthy (I see no signs of blight or any other disease year after year). Wery well crosspollinate with "Wepster" hazelnut.

Wassckly Wabbits

Plants (one each McDonald/Polly O/Wepster) were in excellent shape and planting went well.... unfortunately within a few days the Wepster was reduce to a single stem with just three leaves remaining in spite of the tomato cages I used to fend off the deer (I suspect the wabbits as there are many nearby native Filberts that the deer could feast on). The nearby Polly O and McDonald fared better as they were only half eaten! The remaining plants are now surrounded by individual wire cages. Hopefully they will recover.

Healthy Tree

The tree arrived very healthy. I had to wait about a week to plant it but the tree grew and stayed very healthy looking. Planted it now and it seems to be doing great
