Corylus avellana 'McDonald'

Prohibited from shipping to Oregon.

McDonald is a heavy producer of delicious kernals with a very high nut meat-to-shell ratio. This new, highly blight-resistant selection from Oregon State U. blooms for longer than any other variety and ripens early in the season.

McDonald is an upright, open-form filbert bush/tree that can be maintained at 10' tall. Wepster, as well as York, Polly-O, and Yamhill, are excellent pollinizers for this popular variety.

USDA Zone: 5-8

Grow Height:  10'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: August - September

Pollination: Needs an Early-Blooming Pollinizer

Hapy "McDonald" hazelnut in PA, zone 6B/7a.

I planted "McDonald" hazelnut from Raintree Nursery in spring 2019. Now it is mature tee of 10 ft tall and produces tasty nuts. Nuts are not large, but there is very little free space between shell and kernel. Therefore, kernels are of comparable size to industrial hazelnuts, just 10-20% smaller. However, the flavor is wonderful. Nuts are slightly oblong, compared to "Wepster" round nuts. The tree grows more upward than wide, is narrower than "Wepster", and is healthy (I see no signs of blight or any other disease year after year). Wery well crosspollinate with "Wepster" hazelnut.

Raintree sells unhealthy plants and refuses to follow its stated refund policies.

My hazelnuts didn't arrive until more than a month after I had ordered them - they were completely dried out, with all leaves dead. Raintree's refund policy states that it will approve claims for potted plants that have leafed out but arrive dead, but it refused to give me a refund, insisting that I plant the hazelnut and keep watering it for a month before they'd consider whether to give me a refund.

Hazelnut potted

I’m shocked this came in such a good condition and with all the leaves intact. I put them in the ground and they’re doing well so far.

Trees came with an infestation of aphids. The company said use dish soap, I did but it didn’t help.

Beautiful strong plants

ordered this variety together with Wepster. Both bushes arrived strong, healthy, and are growing well. Very happy.

McDonald filbert Tree arrived not very healthy

One brunch was completely dry & fell off the tree straight from box. Then I found out some top leaves were blackish & had fungus. I had to remove several leaves for fungus not to spread.
I hope it will be all right.

Wassckly Wabbits

Plants (one each McDonald/Polly O/Wepster) were in excellent shape and planting went well.... unfortunately within a few days the Wepster was reduce to a single stem with just three leaves remaining in spite of the tomato cages I used to fend off the deer (I suspect the wabbits as there are many nearby native Filberts that the deer could feast on). The nearby Polly O and McDonald fared better as they were only half eaten! The remaining plants are now surrounded by individual wire cages. Hopefully they will recover.

Healthy Tree

The tree arrived very healthy. I had to wait about a week to plant it but the tree grew and stayed very healthy looking. Planted it now and it seems to be doing great

wish i woulda

My Beautiful McDonald Hazelnut plants arrived brilliantly dressed in spring green! Healthy, stable, and well protected. Could not have asked for more with arrival presentation. SADLY, i failed. Yes, in the ground and happily nurtured in the process and then another freeze! Covered and i thought protected but they still took a hit. They come in pots for goodness! I shoulda considered keeping them in the house a week or two. Wish i woulda. They will be fine but, maybe instead of YOU wishin you woulda, consider.....
