QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Would the female produce nuts the first year with male nearby?

Probably not, nut trees usually need 5+ years minimum after transplant to start flowering. Also, the fruits of the Ginko tree have a smell that is considered by many to be unpleasant, but if you can handle it the nuts (inside the fruits) are good quality.

  • Is this species biloba?

    Yes. This is Gingko biloba.

  • The City accidentally replaced my damaged (auto crashed!) ginkgo street tree with a female, and I get fruit like crazy (making a big mess on the sidewalk)! Some elderly neighbors come by and take as many nuts as they can (I welcome them!), but I had heard that ginkgo fruits were toxic unless handled just right. Can you say more about how to make the nuts edible? And are any ginkgo nuts edible, or only certain cultivars? Thanks!

Ginkgotoxin in nuts is a complicated subject with concentrations varying wildly depending on location and season and toxicity appearing at different rates in different people. Ginkgotoxin action is still poorly understood and there is no reliable way to remove it from the nuts. The safest bet is to not eat them.

  • Do you have female ginkgo tree ?

This is a female ginko tree.

Both Ginkgos arrived in perfect condition. Wonderful packaging. They are thriving on deck now. Took quite hit from a hail storm last night but will recover. Plan on transplanting in a week or so. Thanks
