Asimina triloba 'NC 1'

NC 1  is a new, early-ripening variety from Ontario, Canada. While the harvest is not as bountiful as other varieties, the quality of the fruit makes up for it! Large and flavorful, tasting strongly of banana with mango undertones and a refreshing melon aftertaste. Its high pulp-to-seed ratio and wonderfully dense flesh  means more fruit on your spoon!

Great for cool region growers. Hand pollination will increase fruit set, alternatively, adding a small pile of decaying meat to the base of each tree just before blooms open will bring in the flies and beetles that pollinate these unusual trees. Shade from direct sun during first 2 summers - even mature trees may benefit from afternoon shade in hot climates. Also protect young trees from slug and snail damage. Requires approx. 500 chill hours and 2200 Growing Degree Days (GDD).

USDA Zone: 5-9

Grow Height: 10'- 15'

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What is the ideal weather temperature range(s) for Paw Paw fruit trees? I live just north of Houston Texas.

Paw Paw loves hot summers and cold winters, but should not be planted in full sun or even afternoon sun. Until the tree is well established, usually 3-5 years old, it can die from sunscald.

Success with "NC 1", PA zone 6b/7a.

I received and planted "NC 1" in spring 2019 (in a pair with the "Shenandoah"). It started slowly initially during the first year, but has ramped up in later years and reached 6' by 2022 when it bloomed (just few flowers as a shy start...). With hand pollination I succeeded to start one bunch of 2 fruits. Very delicious, mild flavor fruit, low seed count, excellent quality, exactly as described in the literature. Very dark green, big leaves of the tree make it exceptional. "NC 1" does not bloom so abundantly as "Shenandoah". However, in case of effective pollination, it may be an advantage: no fruit finning may be needed to avoid overcrop.
