Prunus avium 'Black Tartarian'

Black Tartarian is an heirloom variety of sweet cherry. It originated in Russia, where it grows native in the Circassia region, Black Tartarian was introduced in England in 1794 as Roland's Large Black Heart. Later it would make to European markets renamed Fraser's Black Tartarian, by which we know it today. Black Tartarian has a sweet, fruity flavor and is commonly used for jams and sauces, as well as traditionally pickled in Eastern Europe. 

Black Tartarian is an early ripener that is well adapted to most soil conditions. Needs a pollinizer, which can be any other sweet cherry variety except Lambert, Royal Ann or Napoleon. Requires 700+ chill hours.

    Yes they will, since they are both sweet cherries. Only cherries of the same type (sweet vs tart) will pollinate each other.

    Without cross pollination this tree will not set fruit. You will need a self-fertile cherry tree, or to plant a compatible cherry elsewhere.

    Yes those will do fine.

  • I have a sweet black tartarian that is in full bloom however my rainier cherry and Stella are just getting started….. my black tarterian doesn’t ever fruit assuming because bloom cycle weeks apart….. what can I do to pollinate it ?

    A sour cherry, or sour cherry hybrid, will bloom before Rainer or Stella and should help with your pollination window problems. Try Montmorency, Almaden Duke, or Kansas Sweet.

Not what I expected

I receivd a 4.5 foot stick: one stick with roots. There is no proof that it even is what I ordered. While the rest of my trees have leaves, the stick is barely starting to bud. For the same price, I could have gotten something 2-3 foot higher from Sky nursery nearby.
At this point, I do not know: maybe it is the real deal, or I've been dealt the same deal the People's Republic Of Somewhere does...!

Leaves are wilting

Initially the tree was ok but within the last week all the new leaves are wilting. See photos below. It’s in a pot for now so watering/ soil should not be an issue. What can I do?

Overated on size

It took a delay in shipping to start off.
Size was smaller than I thought. When I order from starks they send trees at least 5/8" trucks at the grafts and at approx 60" so your getting older trees. these that came in that I ordered for the Royal cherry and the black tartarian came in at 1/2" trunk diameter at the graft. Being they shipped late and took a delay I imagined they ran out and had to outsource from another nursery. This was my first time ordering from Raintree and was disappointed in quality in size they were short at about 48" approx.
We will see if I try them again in the future.

Late purchase

So, I purchased this tree late in the season to replace a tree a local deer decided to eat down to the ground. I wasn’t sure what condition the tree would come in, but it was a beautiful bare root and within a week it has leaves and is doing well. I put a fence around it to keep the deer from munching on it this time around.

Giving this one a try

The day I received my bare root tree I planted it. In less then a week it was bursting with new foliage! I have another that I planted last year. Both were savagely attacked by Japanese beetles!
