Leycestria formosa

Also called chocolate berry, this rare and interesting multi-stemmed, semi-evergreen, columnar shrub grows to 6 feet tall. In the late summer and early fall it produces dangling clusters of soft, small, round, pink berries that turn dark purple when ripe. They have a subtle flavor akin to bitter chocolate mixed with raisin.

This robust shrub, originally found growing in the lower altitudes of Tibet, is fast growing and pretty in the landscape, with clusters of white flowers with red purple bracts. One gallon size. USDA Zones 7-9.

Size: 1 Gallon Pot

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I'm Zone 7A, Clarksville, TN, and your information says I could grow this in my zone, but not if it needs trellising. "Columnar shrub" makes me think of the ...essentially... stick apple trees, and they need support... Also, sun? shade? type of soil requirements? years to bear? Thanks!

This plant spreads from it crown and is strongly upright in habit with a graceful weeping form at the top, but no it doesn't need support. Full sun is best and it grows in a wide range of soils.

Healthy start!

The plant arrived and is good-sized. New growth has begun so I look forward to seeing it take off in the spring! Reminds me of Ireland ????
