Red Raspberry Plants

Red raspberry plants (Rubus idaeus) are popular fruiting shrubs known for their sweet-tart berries, which are versatile for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. They grow on biennial canes, with the first-year canes (primocanes) developing foliage and the second-year canes (floricanes) producing fruit. Some varieties, known as everbearing or fall-bearing raspberries, also produce a late-season crop on primocanes. Red raspberries thrive in well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5–6.5 and need full sun for optimal yields. To grow them, choose a sunny location, amend the soil with organic matter, and plant canes about 2–3 feet apart. Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and water consistently, particularly during dry spells. A trellis or support system helps keep the canes upright and improves air circulation. Prune spent floricanes after fruiting and thin primocanes to prevent overcrowding. With proper care, red raspberry plants produce abundant, delicious berries for many years.
