Prunus fruticosa x Prunus cerasus 'Carmine Jewel'

Carmine Jewel is a revelation, combining the lusciousness of sweet cherries with the complex flavors of pie (or tart) cherries, and the easy-to-maintain, dwarf-growth habit of bush cherries. It's a hardy and beautiful addition to any landscape or home orchard.

Expect 15+ pounds of tasty cherries by year 4, and 20-30 pounds by year 5; this tree is easy care and self-fruitful. Also a great pollinizer for early-blooming sweet cherry varieties like Almaden Duke, Royal Lee, and Minnie Lee.

It depends on the size of the rootstock. Anywhere between 24 to 48" tall.

  • Does this Carmine Jewel dwarf cherry tree bear the same fruit as the bush cherry Carmine Jewel, or are bush cherries completely different species than cherry trees?

It is a cross between the bush cherry and a sweet cherry Prunus fruticosa x Prunus cerasus 'Carmine Jewel'. It will produce similar, but sweeter fruit.

  • Aren't Prunus fruticosa the European Dwarf cherries, which aren't the same thing as a sweet cherries; Prunus Avium?

Yes. P. fruticosa is genetically distinct from P. avium. It is believed that P. avium, in general, is a hybrid of P. cerasus and P. fruitcosa, and this is a modern example of that.

  • What would be a good cherry variety to add to improve yield of an existing Carmine Jewel Cherry?

Early bloomers like Royal Lee, Minnie Royal, or Almaden Duke.
